Underground mode
From Simutrans Wiki
Underground mode is very useful to provide public transport to the congested urban areas, without having to deal with the heavy traffic there, and without having to delete a lot of buildings (and other things) to create a transportation network.
The underground mode was introduced in version 0.99.03 (released in November 2006).
Probably you would want to read a step-by-step tutorial: Building a tunnel.

Entering Underground mode
To begin, build a tunnel or just a tunnel entry (don't switch to underground mode yet). (If holding Ctrl while applying the tunnel building tool, only the tunnel entry is built, not the whole tunnel including an exit on the opposing slope.) Now, use Shift+U as key combination on the keyboard, to enter underground mode (same to switch back). You can also use the Display Mode by going to the menu and then click on display, then tick on the Underground Mode. (recent versions only)
To start a tunnel in a congested area, you can use (so-called "artificial") slopes: lower land and put an "up-ramp" (in the desired direction) to be able to build a tunnel entry. So this needs only one free tile, instead of six (with "natural" slopes). However this costs more than using "natural" slopes.
Building
When building below the surface, the tunnel building tool has to be used to build all track/road tiles (instead of the normal road/track building tools - don't use them, as they may do funny things on the surface). You can only start building from existing tunnel tiles. On the underground track/road, you can place depots, stops/stations, signals/signs and electrification. It's even possible to equip a road tunnel with tram tracks.
Caution: deleting the tunnel entry will delete the whole underground structure that is connected to it (unless it's occupied by vehicles).
Detaching from the surface
Once the tunnel entry has been built and extended, the connection to the tunnel entry can be destroyed (and only then the tunnel entry itself), thereby creating a pure underground network.
Levels in the underground mode
It is even possible to have different levels in underground mode (at different depths). This allows to create underground networks which do not intersect with each other. On the other hand, the only way to connect underground networks of different levels is to build tunnel entrances (one for each underground network) near each other, and to connect those on the surface.
Building under water
Using slopes, it is even possible to build tunnel systems under water. What has to be done, is to use two slopes overlapped on a water surface. After the underground way is built, the connection to the surface can be destroyed, if desired.
STUB, should be finished....
Note: Cannot be done in the latest stable version (102.0), must be done using a beta version.
