Speed bonus

The speed bonus in Simutrans is used to reward the use of high-speed vehicles for passengers, mail and products that need to be transported fast.

It is calculated based on

  • the amount by which the maximum speed of the transporting vehicle (convoy, to be exact) exceeds the expected/average speed for vehicles of a certain way category, e.g. rail vehicles, road vehicles
  • the freight type (highest for passengers, mail and printer's ink (pak64) - lowest for bulk goods)
  • the amount of freight of the given type
  • the distance travelled

In the game, you can see the speed bonus requirements under "Main Menu"-"Lists"-"List of all goods", and also calculate the revenue for a certain speed there: use the arrow buttons near the top to change the speed for which you want to see the prices (screenshot is for pak64 V99.13):

Note: in the current implementation, the bonus does not depend on the actual speed or delay of delivery, it depends only on the (theoretical) maximum speed. The incentive to not use highly overloaded trains is that they will move extremely slowly, so they deliver at very low rates, but still need a track of their own.

When using the timeline, the expected speed changes over time, as newer (faster) vehicle types become available at certain dates. This may force you to replace older vehicles by newer ones.
