Simutrans packages

To play Simutrans you need two parts of the program:
- First, you need the executable (binary)
- and you need a graphics set, also called 'pak set' or even 'pak' (Pak64, Pak128)
Executable
The executable is different for each of the following, supported Operating Systems:
Windows
There are two executable packages for Windows users:
The GDI version uses native windows functions and is therefore able to work with all UTF-charsets. You might have problems with sound on Windows 9x.
The SDL version might be slightly faster than GDI, but it does not run on Windows 95.
Linux
An SDL version is available, which should run on many Linux distributions.
Mac
The most important Simutrans versions are also available for Intel-based Macs, using the SDL-Framework.
BeOS
Simutrans is also available for BeOS, based on Allegro.
Graphic packages
A number of graphic packages, or "paks", are available for Simutrans. The two major paks are pak64 and pak128, and many other paks with variations in graphic style, tile size, and gameplay rules, are based on these two major paks. Due to the modular nature of Simutrans paks, individual vehicles, buildings, and even industry networks may be packaged and distributed.
Pak64
Pak64 is the main (or standard) graphics package (pak set) for Simutrans - it is developed together with the program. Its name is derived from the size of its graphics tiles: 64x64 pixels.
Pak64 Extensions
Collections of new factories and vehicle types for certain additional freight types.
- Food Chain: add-on for different kinds of food.
- Waste Chain : add-on for handling waste.
Pak128
Since Simutrans is capable of other tile sizes, pak128 is gaining popularity with its more detailed graphics, two times larger than pak64 (in each dimension).
Other graphic-sets
Simutrans also has other graphics sets, some of which focus on certain countries, or on specific styles.
- pakGerman: German set. 64x64-size.
- pakJapan: Set of Japanese buildings and vehicles, 64x64-size.
- pakAbo: A Finnish style set, with clear colors and contours, 64x64-size.
- pakHD: is a set of Hand-Drawn black and white graphics. It is the first set in 96x96-size.
- pak32: This set uses very small 32x32-size graphics, but due to it's comic style, the contours are easily visible.
- pakMars: This set is everything about Mars and things you have never seen before, well the Pak is not ready yet.
- pak96.comic: size is 96x96, style is like a comicworld (The linktexts are in german. - Search the downloadlink a little bit to bottom.)
